Elsey National Park

The 13840 ha park is situated a few km East of Mataranka. The main attractions are thermal pools, the Roper River and historic sites.

Roper River, which flows gently in the dry season but rages in the wet, is good for boating, canoeing, fishing and swimming, although swimming is not permitted in the wet season due to raging currents and the risk of salt water crocodiles. Apparently there are also fresh water crocodiles in the river but they don't eat humans so you're allowed to swim with them!

The park has a variety of walking tracks, leading to a variety of attractions, including a thermal pool, which is worth soaking in for a while; a small but attractive waterfall; and a number of historic sites, including a WWII Aboriginal army camp and the remains of farming activities.
