The Nut

Dominating the skyline for kilometres around Stanley is The Nut - of volcanic origin, 13 million years old and rising up to 152 metres.

The Nut is home to a mutton bird colony. In 1935 it housed a cable station when a submarine cable become the State's first communications link with Victoria.

There is a sealed walking path all the way to the top and then a good walking track around the top - a return walk of about 2 hours from the caravan park. For the less energetic there is also a chairlift to the top.

Whichever way you get up there, the spectacular views of the surrounding farmlands in one direction and out to sea in the other makes it all worthwhile.
