Glen Helen Gorge is 132 km west of Alice Springs and is the only gorge along this road that is on the southern side - meaning the sun shines on it and I can get some decent photos. It is now the home to a tourist resort, with a range of accommodation options.
The permanent waterhole at Glen Helen Gorge is home for a number of types of water birds. The waterhole was used by Aborigines during severe drought. It was first used to water horses and cattle in 1880s.
