Bat's Wing Coral Tree
(Erythrina vespertilio)

Scientific name: Erythrina vespertilio.
Common names: Bat's Wing Coral Tree, Grey Corkwood or Bean Tree.
A small, straggly tree, 6-10 metres high.
Native to north and north-east Australia.
Grows in a wide range of soils but requires good drainage and plenty of sun.
Deciduous in the dry season.
Has thorns on the trunk and branches.
Bark is creamy-grey, deeply furrowed and corky.
Flowers are scarlet to orange-red, pea-shaped, 3-4 cm long and appear in August and September.
The wood was traditionally used by Aborigines for making woomeras, coolamons and shields, either for warfare or ceremonially.
