Why won't the door open?

Category: What could possibly go wrong?. Published: 23 Jun 2009

I learnt a new skill when I was on Bruny Island, Tasmania -- how to break into a campervan! Just when I thought I'd had all the problems I was going to have with my first campervan it came up with a new one.

Coming back to the van after a walk, for some reason the door wouldn't open. The key turned but the door wouldn't open. I tried everything I could think of but the door still wouldn't open.

I went to the caravan park office and explained the problem. They said there was probably no-one on the island who could help -- Bruny Island is a small island south of Hobart and there are very few services on the island. I made a few phone calls and found that no-one on the island could help.

The best suggestion offered was to break into the van using a jemmy bar. Which I did surprisingly easily without doing too much damage -- an advantage of having an old van that was built when security wasn't considered an issue.

I don't know what the problem was. I took the lock apart but couldn't find anything wrong with it. I sprayed it with WD40, put it back together again and never had another problem.
